Policy on the use of Artificial Intelligence in research and scientific writing

Las herramientas de inteligencia artificial no podrán ser reconocidas como autoras o coautoras de un manuscrito, debido a que no pueden asumir responsabilidad sobre el contenido científico, la integridad de los datos, los conflictos de interés, ni el cumplimiento de principios éticos y legales asociados con la autoría académica.

El Boletín de la Sociedad Geológica Mexicana permite el uso limitado de herramientas de inteligencia artificial únicamente como apoyo auxiliar en tareas de corrección ortográfica, revisión gramatical, mejora de redacción o edición lingüística del manuscrito, siempre que dicho uso no implique la generación sustancial de contenido científico, resultados, interpretaciones, análisis, discusiones o conclusiones.

No se permite el uso de herramientas de inteligencia artificial para:

• generar total o parcialmente manuscritos científicos;
• elaborar resultados, interpretaciones, discusiones o conclusiones;
• fabricar, modificar o manipular datos, imágenes, figuras o evidencias científicas;
• generar referencias bibliográficas inexistentes o no verificadas;
• sustituir la interpretación crítica, el análisis científico o la responsabilidad intelectual de las personas autoras.

Las personas autoras serán plenamente responsables de la exactitud, originalidad, integridad y validez de todo el contenido enviado, independientemente del uso de herramientas automatizadas de apoyo editorial o lingüístico.

Cuando se haya utilizado inteligencia artificial como apoyo en la preparación lingüística del manuscrito, las personas autoras deberán declararlo de manera explícita, indicando la herramienta utilizada y el propósito específico de su uso.

El equipo editorial podrá solicitar aclaraciones adicionales sobre el uso de inteligencia artificial durante cualquier etapa del proceso editorial. En caso de identificarse un uso no declarado, engañoso o contrario a las buenas prácticas científicas y editoriales, el manuscrito podrá ser rechazado o, si ya hubiese sido publicado, sujeto a correcciones, expresiones de preocupación, retractación o retiro.

El boletín mantendrá esta política en revisión permanente, considerando la evolución tecnológica, los debates internacionales sobre ética editorial y las recomendaciones emitidas por organismos especializados en publicación científica.

Artificial intelligence tools may not be recognized as authors or co-authors of a manuscript, since they cannot assume responsibility for the scientific content, data integrity, conflicts of interest, or compliance with the ethical and legal principles associated with academic authorship.

The Boletín de la Sociedad Geológica Mexicana permits the limited use of artificial intelligence tools solely as auxiliary support for spelling correction, grammatical revision, writing improvement, or linguistic editing of the manuscript, provided that such use does not involve the substantial generation of scientific content, results, interpretations, analyses, discussions, or conclusions.

The use of artificial intelligence tools is not permitted for:

• generating scientific manuscripts totally or partially;
• producing results, interpretations, discussions, or conclusions;
• fabricating, modifying, or manipulating data, images, figures, or scientific evidence;
• generating nonexistent or unverified bibliographic references;
• replacing the critical interpretation, scientific analysis, or intellectual responsibility of the authors.

Authors shall be fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, integrity, and validity of all submitted content, regardless of the use of automated editorial or linguistic support tools.

When artificial intelligence has been used as support in the linguistic preparation of the manuscript, authors must explicitly declare it, indicating the tool used and the specific purpose of its use.

The editorial team may request additional clarifications regarding the use of artificial intelligence at any stage of the editorial process. If undeclared, misleading, or unethical use contrary to good scientific and editorial practices is identified, the manuscript may be rejected or, if already published, subject to corrections, expressions of concern, retraction, or withdrawal.

The bulletin will keep this policy under continuous review, considering technological developments, international debates on editorial ethics, and recommendations issued by organizations specialized in scientific publishing.
