Abstract

This article examines the role of geoethics in strengthening both the teaching and professional practice of geosciences in Mexico. To this end, it analyzes the current landscape of geoethics integration across the various disciplines and fields of knowledge encompassed within the Earth Sciences, emphasizing its importance in ensuring a geoscientific development that is both sustainable and ethically responsible. In this context, the article proposes strategies for the inclusion of geoethics as a key subject in higher education programs related to the Earth Sciences in Mexico. Through examples and case studies, the practical applications of geoethics are discussed in relation to several geoscientifically relevant areas in the country, including land and natural resource management, disaster mitigation, and the conservation of geological heritage. The main challenges in these areas are identified, and strategies are recommended to enhance geoethical awareness, with the goal of fostering a meaningful shift toward fairer and more environmentally and socially respectful practices in Mexico. Among the most pressing challenges to be addressed are those posed by extractive industries, natural hazards and the anthropogenic factors that exacerbate them (with particularly critical impacts in urban environments), as well as threats to water and soil resources, energy sources, and climate change.
