ABSTRACT
Puerto Escondido is a tourist city located on the coast of Oaxaca state, bordering the Mexican Pacific. This is an area of ecological relevance due to the presence of different ecosystems: wetlands, coastal lagoons, sandy beaches and dunes; being important to highlight the importance for turtle nesting in these beaches. Urban development has followed the global trend of accelerated growth, particularly over the past 30 years. This dynamic highlights the importance of studying the area to support informed decision-making aimed at the sustainable use of the coastal zone. The present study is a reconstruction of historical evolution of the shoreline in which different methodologies (topographic survey, Geographic Information System (GIS), and satellite images) were applied to determine the displacement and the erosion rates of beaches near Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca. The study area included 6 beaches, which covers 16 km along the Puerto Escondido coastline: Punta Bacocho, Puerto Angelito, Bahía Principal, Zicatela, Colotepec and Los Naranjos. The present study investigates the erosion rate from the years 2003 to 2020. The erosion rates determined for the Los Naranjos and Puerto Angelito beaches were -1.5 m·yr-1 and -0.28 m·yr-1, respectively. The accretion rates for beaches were: Colotepec (0.98 m·yr-1), Zicatela (2.08 m·yr-1), Bahía Principal (1.31 m·yr-1) and Punta Bacocho (3.05 m·yr-1). With these results, we concluded that the positive displacement is dominant, indicating the accretion processes (1.03 m·yr-1), being remarkable the sediment supply from the roads and the Colotepec river.
